Description
Milk thistle silymarin is a plant belonging to the sunflower family and has ancient origins in the Mediterranean. It was initially used for liver problems and as an antidote for fungal poisoning throughout Europe. Silymarin is the active compound present in milk thistle (SilyBum Marianum) seed extract. It is a flavonolignan composed of many other flavonolignans: silibinin or silibinin is the most abundant. All parts of the plant contain silymarin, but the seeds contain particularly high levels. Medical silymarin is extracted from the seeds of the plant.
